Marilyn, a people who have the right to vote in a functional election process get what the majority vote for. If they are seriously interested in getting better candidates to run, or want more voters to agree with their own values, they should get directly involved in the political process. The United States of America has a constitution and Bill of Rights which are so good that I offered my life to the USA for eight years as a Marine to defend them. Americans should be very stern in ejecting from the political process those who abuse or show contempt or wish to replace the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Washington and Eisenhower were exemplary men, but there are many exemplary people in the USA who could lead just as well, but won't risk their family's reputation and tranquility to be abused by the slander mill now controlling elections in this country. Elections were always tough, but 24-hour News has added a measure of non-stop vitriol that who can bear? As for charisma, Adolph Hitler had so much he mesmerized his people. As did and still do many villains. Give us an honest, accomplished president with a truly transparent history, and our country will not need to ride the roller coaster we are on.

Any reassessment of leadership must include two other words: "charisma," (similar sounding, but not similar to) and politics. If we are fortunate, men like Washington and Eisenhower combine the best of all three qualities. Make no mistake, though, Washing and Ike were both charismatic, and politicians through and through. In fact, being coalition military leaders, they were politicians long before they sought political office. In the history of the world, they were also exceptions. More times than not, we're trading off strengths and weaknesses and making the best choices we can. I submit that those who are political and charismatic can be expert in hiding their true character, which doesn't help.
